KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) -It has been three months since the departure of former Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Chief Vernon Coakley, but local civil rights leaders still have questions about that decision.
Coakley had been on leave for four months following four harassment complaints made by female employees in the department. An independent investigation done by a group called InCompliance determined those complaints were credible.
NAACP President Wendy Fields questions the ability of this particular consultant to do a fair assessment.
ISSAC Executive Director Charlae Davis wants to know why this firm was selected.
City officials say the firm does however have experience with the specific allegations leveled at Coakley, which involved sexual harassment
Coakley disagreed with the findings. He was allowed to retire in good standing.
City Manager Jim Ritsema sent a letter explaining the process to Fields earlier this year, but the NAACP wasn’t satisfied with the response.
