KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — The Kalamazoo Growlers kicked off their season with an opening party last night at the Radisson to announce the new name of their Mascot.
Apparently a ball club in Oregon, the Hillsboro Hopps already had a Mascot with a name similar to Barlee, the name originally chosen by voters for the Kalamazoo Bear.
So the Kalamazoo organization went back to the voters and gave them a choice between Beary, Porter or Blooper, and this time they chose “Porter”.
Former Tiger Darrell Evans was on hand at the kick-off party to sign autographs and greet the public.
The home opener for the Growlers at Homer Stryker Field is May 29th.
