BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Battle Creek Police Department is investigating a shooting that led to the death of a Fulton man, with investigators saying that self-defense was involved.
According to a news release from the department, police responded to a distress call received from the Georgetown Estates Apartments at 1975 East Columbia Avenue around 9:41 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8.
When they arrived, officers found 40-year-old Donald Richard Guthrie who had been shot. Guthrie was transported by LifeCare Ambulance to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators say it appears that Guthrie had forced his wan into the victim’s Georgetown Estates apartment, at which time the victim shot Guthrie. They went onto say that it also appears that the victim acted in self-defense.
Police are still investigating the incident and the case will be submitted to the Calhoun County Prosecuting Attorney’s office for review.
Due to the ongoing investigation, police are not releasing further details at this time.
