The Michigan Department of Transportation does plan to repair a bridge damaged when part of an excavator crashed into it this week, just not right now.
M-Dot officials say that the US-12 bridge over M-51 near Niles is currently safe for traffic, but plans to repair the span are in the works after an excavator fastened to a semi’s trailer struck and damaged the bridge’s fascia beam.
The right shoulder of eastbound M-12 is blocked off while a more detailed inspection of the bridge is taken next week.
The unnamed semi driver will be charged for repairs.
A similar incident occurred on US-31 in Holland last June; that bridge has not yet been fully repaired.
