KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo County could be in for another multi-million dollar windfall of cash, and at least one expert on drug addiction says he would like to see at least some of that money directed at the victims of the opioid crisis.
The County Board became a plaintiff in the cases against drug firms, distributors and drug stores who have now agreed to multi-billion dollar settlements, after the distribution of Oxycontin and similar drugs resulted in thousands of deaths.
Recovery Advocate Dom Gladstone told County Commissioners this week that they always need additional funding.
County Administrator Kevin Catlin says they have just begun to receive money from the early settlements, but he estimates they could eventually get over $20-million dollars.
Nearly half of the state’s liquor tax revenues go to substance abuse programs, but none of the income from Marijuana. Those revenues go to the schools, roads and local governments.
