BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Battle Creek Police Department released more information Tuesday, February 21 on the fatal shooting that left a Battle Creek Central High School student dead on Friday, February 17.
According to Police Sergeant Jeff Case, 17-year-old Jack Snyder was fatally shot while on his way home from a birthday party when he stopped to offer two younger teens a ride because of frigid temperatures.
When Snyder offered the ride to the 14-year-old and 13-year-old who were later arrested in connection to the killing, the two suspects attempted a carjacking. Snyder was then shot twice and found face down next to his vehicle in the road around 12:10 a.m. on Friday. Emergency responders attempted to revive Snyder, but was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 14-year-old boy was taken into custody around 2 a.m. when police located him in a car parked in the area of Jackson Street and Bedford Road.
The gun used in the fatal shooting was then recovered, and the boy was taken to the Calhoun County Youth Center according to police.
The 13-year-old boy turned himself into the Battle Creek Police Department with a parent at about 5 p.m. on Sunday and is being held at the Calhoun County Youth Center.
According to the Calhoun County District Court, the 14-year-old boy is being charged as an adult, while the 13-year-old could be charged in a blended sentencing, as a juvenile and an adult, according to a hearing held on Tuesday.
A memorial for Snyder has been set up on the corner of Battle Creek Avenue and Capital Avenue Southwest.
