KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — There has always been an uneasy peace between students who live on Lafayette and believe they have the inalienable right of every college student to party, and Public Safety which has the task of keeping the public order, and have been enforcing a zero tolerance policy on noise for years.
It dates back to the 70’s and the Lafayette St. Riots. Over the years, clashes occurred on the first weekends in the fall, and a few times after big sports victories, or losses.
Last year, it was a house crawl that got too big. Students started throwing things at officers, who responded with teargas.
There may be a Housecrawl today, depending on the weather. Public Safety is assigning additional officers, the county will be bringing out their mounted patrol and other police agencies will be on standby.
