CALHOUN COUNTY (WKZO)– It was a tragic end for a road trip for a church group returning to Grand Rapids from an event in Alabama.
Michigan State Police say it appears the 57-year-old driver fell asleep at the wheel at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday along I-69 in Takonsha Township.
The highway curved and the car went straight, leaving the pavement and striking a tree in the median.
Rescue crews had to cut the car apart to extract the survivors. A 64-year-old passenger was dead at the scene and another was reportedly in critical condition.
