DETROIT (WKZO)-The Detroit Tigers are not going to win every game they play this year. They are going to struggle at times. Tonight was one of those nights as they fell to the New York Yankees 5-1.
The Yankees scored in the top of the first inning as they got a double of the bat of Mark Teixeria and Brett Gardner scored to make it 1-0.
Kyle Lobstien (1-1) did a good job holding the Yankees to one run in his six innings of work. Lobstein gave up three hits, walked four and struck out three as well.
The Tigers though did not provide any run support for Lobstien as they were held scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning when Yoenis Cespedes brought home J.D. Martinez with a sacifice fly to center, however the Tigers trailed 4-1. It did not help either that the Tigers hit into four double plays.
The bullpen gave up three runs in the top of the seventh. The Tigers had to use four pitchers to get through the inning. Ian Krol gave up two runs and Tom Gorzelanny gave up one. The Tigers then brought in Al Alburquerque, but had to take him out after nine pitches as he threw only one strike. Blaine Hardy finished off the inning and the game by giving up another run in the top of the ninth making it 5-1 Yankees.
The Tigers did threaten in the bottom of the ninth and load the bases. They scored one run off a walk making the score 5-2, but the next batter, Jose Iglesias, struck out to end the game.
The Tigers will try to win Wednesday night against the Yankees and avoid a two game losing streak. The ace David Price (1-0 0.40 ERA) takes the mound for the Tigers and Adam Warren (0-1 4.82 ERA) will toe the slab for the Yankees. Broadcast time is at 6:40 on 590 WKZO.
