KALAMAZOO (WKZO)– Two teens are in custody, and have reportedly confessed to their roles in a shooting in the 900 block of Clarence St.
The suspected victim remains unidentified.
Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to a 911 call about multiple shots fired on the east side of the Edison neighborhood at 12:30 Sunday afternoon.
Witnesses at the scene were not only able to give a good description of the driver and the white SUV they used to make their escape, but they got the license number as well.
An officer spotted the vehicle at the address on Reed St. where it was registered, but the driver, a teen with long hair, backed out and took off before other officers could arrive, and the chase began.
The driver made the mistake of turning onto Remine, bouncing off a retaining wall and suddenly finding himself on a dead-end street.
Their vehicle was quickly surrounded. The driver surrendered but the front seat passenger fled on foot and was tracked down hiding in a backyard with a .38 caliber revolver on the ground next to him.
The gun had the serial number filed off. It’s been sent to the lab to see if they can still read the number.
The 18-year-old driver and the 17-year-old front seat passenger both confessed. They are being held at the Kalamazoo County Jail for fleeing and eluding, resisting, gun felonies and marijuana possession. They may be formally charged on Monday.
Two juveniles in the back seat were turned over to their parents.
The identity of the target of the initial shooting remains a mystery, and so does his reason for avoiding police.
