MINNEAPOLIS (WKZO)- Shane Greene was on the ropes, starring a loss in the face as the Detroit Tigers trailed the Minnesota Twins after five innings 7-3. The Tigers though rallied in the next inning.
The Tigers offense came to life as Miguel Cabrera started the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run to cut the Twins lead to 7-4. Two batters later J.D. Martinez hit a solo home run, his sixth of the season, and the Twins lead was down to 7-5. The Tigers evened up the score in dramatic fashion as James McCann hit an inside the park home run and brought home Nick Castellanos as well. It was McCann’s first career home run.
The Tigers broke the tie in the top of the eighth when Andrew Romine brought home Yoenis Cespedas to give the Tigers a 8-7 lead. Romine was 4-4 on the day.
Cabrera gave the Tigers a couple of insurance runs when he blasted a two-run home un in the top of the ninth, his fifth of the year, to put the Tiges up 10-7.
Joakim Soria came on in the ninth and put two runners on, but struck out Trevor Plouffe to end the game and give the Tigers a 10-7 victory. Soria picked up his ninth save of the season.
Tigers starter Shane Greene (3-1) gave up seven runs on nine hits and struck out eight over 4 1/3 innings of work. Tom Gorzelanny (1-1) gets the victory.
The Tigers now move on to a big series in Kansas City against the Royals beginning Thursday. Alfredo Simon (4-0 1.65 ERA) will take the mound for the Tigers while the Royals will counter with Danny Duffy (1-0 4.15 ERA). Broadcast time is at 7:45 pm on 590 WKZO.
