STURGIS, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – An apartment resident was killed while a firefighter was injured on New Year’s morning when a fire broke out in Sturgis.
The Sturgis Department of Public Safety reports the fire in the 200 block of West West Street was reported at 1:26 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Fire crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from an upstairs apartment when they arrived.
Once they got inside, they found a unconscious man in his 50s who was not breathing.
The man was removed from the apartment and taken to Sturgis Hospital where he later died.
The fire was contained to the apartment where it started as well as the shared attic space.
Three families were displaced because of the fire and are being assisted by the local Red Cross office and St. Joseph County Victim Services.
The Sturgis Department of Public Safety stated in news release that the fire remains under investigation but is not considered suspicious.
A Department of Public Safety firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation at Sturgis Hospital suffered during rescue efforts.
Assisting the Department of Public Safety were the Michigan State Police, the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, the Tri-Township Fire Department and the St. Joseph County Victim Services Unit.
