KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — Voters will decide the fate of the state’s road funding proposal today and the polls suggest they have already made up their minds against it.
That’s a frightening prospect for Kalamazoo Schools Finance Director Gary Start, who fears what the legislature might do in its stead.
He says many legislators want to resurrect the Bolger Bill, which directly takes funding from the school aid fund and puts it into potholes.
He says if they interpret the opposition to mean it has to be done without increasing taxes, then the schools become the biggest target.
There are some other issues to be decided on the ballot today in Kalamazoo County.
Ross Township voters are being asked to increase their current fire millage and provide better service. Climax Scotts schools are going for a routine renewal of their 18-mill non-homestead property tax.
There is also K-RESA’s request for an additional 1.5 mills to fund special education in the county, which will cost the average homeowner about $50 per year if approved.
