KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — Following up on complaints about locating a Brew Pub on South Burdick Street two weeks ago, Chief Jeff Hadley did some investigating into how liquor licenses are issued and learned that the city has very little control over the process.
He told City Commissioners last night that for many licenses, like the kind issued to party stores or license transfers, the city is not consulted.
He says if they deny a request, the applicant can appeal, but the city is never notified of that appeal or told where to be to defend their decision, unless they ask.
If an appeal is reversed the Michigan Liquor Control Commission does not have to tell them why.
One opponent complains the new Brew Pub and restaurant is near where he lives. It’s also very close to Public Safety Headquarters.
