PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Portage Public Schools Board of Education appointed Ean P. Hamilton as the newest trustee to serve at Portage Public Schools at their public meeting on Monday, December 12.
Hamilton, an attorney whose children attend PPS, was one of 28 applicants considered to fill a vacancy on the Board after former Trustee Rusty Rathburn retired in November.
The current Board members chose Hamilton by each selecting their top three candidates during Monday’s public meeting Monday, with Hamilton receiving the most votes from the six sitting trustees who later voted unanimously to appoint her to the position.
She will serve out the remainder of Rathburn’s seat which ends on December 31, 2024.
In a news release from Portage Public Schools, Hamilton said she will bring a unique perspective to the Board. And as an African American woman, she will serve as a representative for the students of color in PPS.
“I think outside of the box, and I believe that I can offer new ideas and a different perspective for improvements to our District while remaining respectful to those who may disagree with me,” said Hamilton.
Hamilton is a graduate of Thomas M. Cooley Law School where she earned a Juris Doctor degree.
She is also a graduate of the University of Michigan where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English Literature.
Hamilton ran for election to the Board in November 2022 and received the next highest number of votes behind those elected.
