KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo City Commissioners get a presentation on the proposed 2023 city budget this afternoon, but it won’t be the first or last time. They have been discussing bits and pieces all year, and much of the spending is guided by priorities set in the Imagine Kalamazoo 2025 master plan approved 8 years ago.
In fact they have already had a discussion about the 2024 budget, and preliminary plans to begin work on their “Imagine Kalamazoo 2035” plan, which will guide spending for the next decade.
Between now and then, city staff will be collecting and gauging public opinion. Assistant City Manager Rebekah Kik says earlier this year they codified policies and a tool kit to better engage with citizens.
After today’s discussion on next year’s budget, Commissioners will hold a budget work session December 12 and a public hearing January 3, with final approval January 17, 2023.
A copy of the $300-million dollar spending proposal can be viewed at the city’s website.
