LANSING (WKZO) — The Michigan House has given final approval to a controversial measure that will require that the children of parents receiving cash assistance benefits avoid skipping school or possibly jeopardize those payments.
Sponsor Al Pscholka says its essential if they are to break the cycle of poverty that welfare can bring. Education can do that.
It basically codifies a practice that the family Independence Program has already had in place for sometime.
Critics say its not fair to penalize a whole family, particularly the younger siblings, because of the actions of say a teenager who is simply out of control.
The Senate has already approved it. The measure heads for the Governor’s desk.
