KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo County Commissioners held a special meeting on Tuesday, November 22 to make sure a small number of homeowners pay extra taxes this winter.
Two voter approved millages; one for a library that serves Climax and a Plainwell Schools millage that affects a small part of Alamo Township, passed earlier this month, and both take effect in December, which in itself is unusual, because voter approved millages normally don’t kick in until the following year according to Treasurer Thomas Whitener.
Even veteran County Board Members weren’t sure what they were being asked to approve, because it had never come up before. Commissioner Dale Shugars wanted to know what would happen if they voted “no” prompting this response from Board Attorney Angelina Barnes.
With winter tax bills going out on Thursday, November 30, the board had to call a special meeting to get it done in time for all the paperwork and the bills to be correct.
