KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Portage Road at I-94 and the southbound Sprinkle Road ramp to westbound I-94 have reopened.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will continue work on the $87 million project to widen I-94 from Lovers Lane to Sprinkle Road in Kalamazoo County through the winter, weather permitting.
Crews are set to continue work to rebuild the westbound lanes of I-94, rebuild two railroad bridges and the I-94 bridge and interchange at Portage Road, and continue installation of noise abatement barriers.
MDOT officials remind motorists that there will be continuing ramp closures throughout the remainder of the project:
– Northbound Sprinkle Road to westbound I-94.
– Northbound Portage Road to westbound I-94.
– Westbound I-94 to Portage Road.
Northbound Sprinkle Road traffic can access westbound I-94 via the roundabouts at the interchange and using the southbound ramp to westbound I-94.
MDOT and the contractor currently are anticipating a summer 2023 completion for the project, which is several months later than originally planned.
The project has had several delays since its start, including lost time and supply chain issues caused by the pandemic, bridge beam design issues early in the project, and industry-wide cement shortages.
