Ian Kinsler went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI for the Tigers, who have won three in-a-row.
Anibal Sanchez went seven-and-two-thirds to up his record to 4-and-7.
Cubs Pitcher Jon Lester was lit up for five runs and nine hits in only four-and-a-third to fall to 4-and-5.
The Cubs had won their previous two.
Game two in the short series starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Comerica Park.
