BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) — The first of what could be a growing list of charges have been filed against a 52-year-old Van Buren County man following his arrest for a bank robbery at the Chase Branch on Hill Brady Road in Battle Creek.
What made it so unique was that police say Doug Wolthuis was wearing a haz-mat suit and claimed he had anthrax and would use it if they didn’t hand over the cash.
Battle Creek Sgt. Jim Martens says it was the first time he ever heard of a hold up man threatening victims with biological warfare.
There could be more state charges and possibly even federal charges.
They may also try and pursue restitution for some of the tens of thousands spent on the hazardous materials response his claim triggered.
