DEARBORN (WKZO) — Memorial Day may be the official start of the summer vacation season but for most families, it doesn’t really begin until the kids get out of school.
Just like the Griswold’s heading for Wallyworld, the summer vacation season is fraught with dangers, minefields and pitfalls that with just a little sense and preparation can be avoided.
Susan Hiltz with AAA of Michigan says that means being ready for the road. She says get your car checked over by a professional. Have the tires, the hoses and belts checked and the all important air-conditioner recharged, if required.
And just like winter…its a good idea to have a summer emergency kit on hand, complete with jumper cables, a flashlight, a radio, some bottled water, a reflective triangle, a first aid kit and some extra batteries.
The most useful device on the road is a cell phone and a charger to keep it functioning.
One of the biggest threats to summer fun is excessive alcohol use and abuse. Jennifer Smith with the State Health Dept. says it’s at the top of their list, and she says that doesn’t just go for the guys.
She says as studies show women becoming more independent and successful in the work place, it also shows them becoming more susceptible to alcoholism.
A new addition to the list just came on Friday when the first West Nile virus was detected in mid-Michigan…that means you can add a repellant to that Summer safety kit, and you should toss in a bottle of sunscreen for the beach.
