KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — It looks like Democrats will hang onto majority control of the Kalamazoo County Board, despite downsizing and redistricting that some felt may hurt their chances.
The Commission was reduced from 11 to 9 members through redistricting.
The final votes released on Wednesday morning, November 9 switched two races, turning a 5 to 4 majority for Republicans into a 6 to 3 edge for Democrats.
Former Board Chair John Taylor, who returns to the Commission, hopes to reduce the partisan tension and infighting he says has reduced the effectiveness of the board.
He says he is considering whether to run for the board chairmanship.
“I’m going to talk to all of my colleagues and see what their priorities are. If that’s a position that fits where I need to be, than that’s what I’ll do,” said Taylor.
There will be three new faces on the board, Republican Wendy Mazer and Democrats Abigail Wheeler and Dale Deleeuw, who will take office with the New Year.
Incumbents Jen Strebs, Tami Rae, Monteze Morales, John Gisler and Jeff Heppler have all been reelected to new 2-year terms.
