KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – It has been nearly four months since Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Chief Vernon Coakley was put on leave following harassment complaints, and local officials in the black and brown community want to know what’s taking so long.
City Manager Jim Ritsema has been questioned several times about whether Coakley is getting fair and equal treatment.
NAACP President Wendy Fields and ISAAC Executive Director Charlae Davis turned up the pressure at Monday night’s City Commission meeting.
For the first time Ritsema has responded, saying he agrees that it is taking too long.
Ritsema says he still can’t offer details because it’s a personnel matter, but he says he is hoping to have some answers soon.
There have reportedly been complaints against Coakley from three separate individuals.
The investigation is being conducted by an independent outside agency.
