LANSING (WKZO) — State Representative Todd Courser says government should get out of the marriage business and all licenses should be approved by Clergy.
It’s the latest in a string of bills put up by Republicans fearful the U.S. Supreme Court is about to lift the state’s ban on same-sex marriages.
The proposed legislation would ban marriages performed by judges and municipal officials. County Clerks would still issue licenses but they would only become official if signed by a Church official.
Opponents say they can think of several ways it violates the constitution, starting with the separation of church and state.
With the State House gone for the summer, it’s not expected to get a hearing until sometime well after the high court has issued its ruling.
