PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A $20,000 grant from the Kalamazoo Community Foundation will pave the way for Portage Public Schools to grow our own employees into certified teachers.
The program is modeled after the Michigan Department of Education program that aims to address the statewide shortage of teaching staff in Michigan schools.
The grant will provide financial assistance for tuition and certification, testing and permit fees for currently employed support staff at PPS, such as paraprofessionals, substitute teachers and other non certified staff, to return to school for their teaching certification.
“Our goal is to remove the financial barrier that many working adults have while trying to balance working, family and continuing their education,” said Melinda Nelson, Human Resources Recruiting and Retention Specialist at PPS.
The pilot program is set to begin in 2023.
