KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo County Government has named Taylor Koopman as the county’s new Public Information Officer, effective Friday, October 14.
Koopman is taking over for Niyja Bouie, and is set to handle inquiries from the media, the public and elected officials, disseminate information, and coordinate public information and warnings.
Koopman brings with her four years of experience in nonprofits, federal and tribal government, where she honed her skills in media relations and strategic communications.
She previously managed public affairs for the $5 billion Tyndall Air Force Base rebuild in Panama City, Florida, and more recently served as a public relations and communications expert for the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi.
“We desired to recruit an individual who would not only serve as an invaluable resource to the media, but increase awareness of the County’s execution of strategic priorities and initiatives,” said Kevin A. Catlin, County Administrator/Controller.
The West Michigan native holds a bachelor’s degree in public relations and a master’s in communication, both from Western Michigan University, and is an active member of the National Association of Government Communicators and the Government Social Media Association.
“Civil service has always been a calling of mine, and I am pleased to be serving a community so close to home. I’m excited to continue developing relationships within the community and building upon the county’s reputation in transparency and extraordinary governance,” said Koopman.
