DETROIT (WKZO)– The sentencing hearing has begun for a Detroit area doctor, Dr. Farid Fata convicted of diagnosing healthy patients with cancer.
The real money was in giving patients cancer treatments, including chemo therapy, so he could defraud the federal government and insurance companies of millions of dollars.
Whether they needed it or not, he told them they had cancer and treated them, prolonging treatment for some cancer patients.
A medical professor testifying for the prosecution said some of Dr. Farid Fata’s patients were at risk of infection because of the high dose of medication they were given.
Four days have been scheduled to hear from hundreds of victims who will testify about the mental anguish and expense they suffered.
Prosecutors are seeking life in prison for Fata.
