PORTAGE (WKZO) — The Assistant Principal at Portage West Middle School has been put on administrative leave after allegations involving a student.
52-year-old Kevin Doerfler has been formally charged by the Attorney General’s office with one count of 2nd degree Criminal Sexual Conduct.
The claim is that he inappropriately touched a female student at the school, outside her clothes last January.
He has been freed after covering a ten thousand dollars bond. As a condition of bond, he must avoid contact with the alleged victim and anyone else under the age of 18.
The prosecution has been handed over to the Attorney General’s office because there just happens to be several staff members in the local prosecutor’s office who have children going to Portage West Middle School and who have had contact with Mr. Doerfler.
Asst. Prosecutor Carrie Klein says they felt it would eliminate any conflict if they turned the case over to the Attorney General.
In a statement the district says it is working with law enforcement and student safety is its highest priority.
Doerfler, who has also worked in Kalamazoo Public Schools and Bangor Schools has an unsullied record to date.
