CHARLESTON TOWNSHIP (WKZO) — The DEQ is working with the State Police, using their meticulous recreation of that record chain reaction collision on I-94 on January 9th to locate possible diesel spills that they haven’t already addressed.
Some of the bigger contamination issues, the spill of thousands of pounds of formic acid and larger diesel spills have already been addressed.
They are working with the responsible trucking companies to test for and fund clean-ups at the sites of smaller spills. Of the 193 vehicles involved in that massive wreck in Kalamazoo County, 76 of them were semi’s.
MDOT’s Nick Schrippa says as the DEQ finishes up its work, they are repairing the cable barriers that took a beating but probably saved some lives as the cars and trucks were piling up in the snow last January.
He says about 90-posts were sheared off but they found that only two of the three concrete foundations that hold either end of the cable will need replacing.
He says the costs are all being covered by those responsible for causing the damage through fines and insurance claims.
He says the work should be completed on Monday.
