ALBION, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – The Festival of the Forks in downtown Albion was disrupted Saturday night when Albion Public Safety officers were attacked by several individuals.
At least five officers suffered minor injuries in the incident while six people, including some juveniles, were arrested.
According to a statement from the Public Safety Department, officers responded to a reported fight near the Bohm Theater during the Festival of the Forks.
They were told that a black male wearing a black mask and a black shirt was in possession of a gun.
Officers found a person fitting that description jogging east on Cass Street into Lloyd Park, followed by many other individuals.
Police tried to make contact with the individual and were pushed away from him by other individuals around him.
An officer was able to grab a hold of his arm and escorted him to their car, where he was handcuffed and detained in the backseat.
Police were attacked with a woman punching one officer in the face.
After four people were arrested, what was described as an “unruly” crowd gathered including a brother of one of the people arrested.
He was tased after fighting with officers and arrested along with his sister.
The three juveniles and three adults arrested were taken to the Department of Public Safety’s station, processed, and then released to family members.
Police say they are in the process of reviewing the video from the incident and completing reports.
Due to the number of people and officers involved, this will take some time to sort out but the department will be requesting charges on those people who interfered with or assaulted officers.
The individual who officers were told had the gun was found to be a 15-year-old juvenile. He was cooperative and taken to ADPS, where we called his parents, who came to the station.
The parent denied police permission to speak to him about the incident and what had occurred.
No gun was found in his possession, and he was released to his parents.
