KALAMAZOO (WKZO)– A fire Sunday evening in an apartment in the 300 block of Phelps in Kalamazoo’s East Side neighborhood has forced the evacuation of 7 other apartments and left about 20 people living in temporary shelter.
Arriving Public Safety officers discovered heavy smoke.
It took them over an hour to locate the source of the fire behind the walls of the apartment.
The Red Cross stepped in to offer assistance to the displaced tenants.
One firefighter had to be treated at the scene for heat exhaustion. Fire Marshal Jim Williams has been called in to look for the cause of the blaze.
