LAPEER (WKZO) — Michigan State Representative Todd Courser is not resigning from office.
He broke his silence on the “Detroit News” story saying he had attempted to have a fake email sent out to help cover up his affair with State Representative Cindy Gamrat.
Courser released a response on his Facebook page and claims he was being blackmailed by anonymous sources to either conform to the party, resign or have their secret affair revealed.
He said the fake email about him being caught having sex with a male prostitute was “put in motion to disrupt the ‘blackmailers’ into giving me some clues” into the threats being made.
It turns out the anonymous sources urging him to resign were his own staffers, who were apparently appalled by his unethical behavior.
He interprets their actions to be driven by their own ambition to become political players in Lansing and conform to the power structure that he says “tries to control every lawmaker in Lansing”. He never identifies them but its apparently a reference to the Republican leadership.
He says in Lansing “you either play along and go along, or they set out to destroy you by doing what they can to malign, smear and undermine you”.
He apologizes profusely to everyone, especially his wife and children for his failures and for being a weak human and straying from what he says has been a marriage that has been troubled for years, but says he is working hard to mend it.
He says while resigning might be the easy way to go for both him and his family, he says its “absolutely essential for the cause of liberty, to have these clandestine operations to control public officials exposed, so I have refused to leave quietly”.
For her part, Gamrat has cancelled a long scheduled meet and greet in Zeeland to hear from constituents Monday night.
