WHITING, INDIANA (WKZO) — Gas Prices have spiked and will continue to drive higher through the week in Michigan and neighboring Great Lakes States, despite having the lowest crude oil prices since the great recession.
Gas Buddy’s Patrick Dehaan says a shut down at BP’s Whiting, Indiana refinery is the reason.
It’s the biggest refinery in the Midwest, and one of the biggest in the U.S. providing 30 to 50% of the fuel used in the region. He says the outage could take a week to repair.
Dehaan expects prices at the pump could peak at over $3 a gallon by the weekend.
He says the good news is he is still expecting prices to dip below $2 a gallon this fall and stay there for a while.
