KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A new study shows that Kalamazoo County government pays its employees about 8 to 12% less than the private sector.
The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners has been under pressure from employees, department heads, and some of its own members for over a year to consider wage hikes. They claim the inability to fill vacant positions has hurt public services, at a time in our history when those services are critically important.
County Administrator Kevin Catlin says a long awaited comprehensive wage study has arrived, which includes a tool to help the board phase in higher salaries equitably.
He says he is already setting aside money in next year’s budget proposal for whatever wage hikes, the board deems appropriate.
The consultant’s report will be presented to the board this afternoon at their Committee of the Whole meeting.
