KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County Dept. of Health and Community Services is advising area residents to ensure that they are protected from Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
The disease, which is transmitted via mosquitoes, has made an appearance in the state, and while no cases have been reported in Kalamazoo County, HCS officials say that following some simple measures will help protect against the disease.
Those include avoiding being outdoors at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active; wearing long sleeve shirts and long pants while outdoors; using an insect repellent that contains DEET; emptying containers with standing water; and making sure door and window screens are intact and secure.
