KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Police arrested a man on Thursday, September 1, in connection to a deadly shooting that happened nearly a year ago.
On September 21, 2021 the Township of Kalamazoo Police Department was called to the scene of a shooting in the 1900 block of Elkerton Avenue where 23-year-old Collin Mitchell was found to be the victim of a gunshot wound. He was later pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.
22-year-old Jayshaun Lamar Bishop of Kalamazoo was arrested without incident in the 800 block of west Walnut St by the Township of Kalamazoo Police Department, with assistance from the Michigan State Police 5th District Fugitive Team and the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
Bishop was charged by the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office on the following charges:
1) one count of open murder: a felony punishable by life in prison.
2) two counts of felony firearm: a felony punishable by two years consecutively with and preceding any term of imprisonment for the felony.
3) one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm: a felony punishable by imprisonment for four or more years.
Bishop was arraigned on Friday, September 2, on his charges in the 8th District Court.
