WAYNE TOWNSHIP, CASS COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Authorities say a school bus driver apparently went through a stop sign and the bus was hit by another vehicle in Cass County’s Wayne Township early this morning.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says at 6:43 a.m. deputies were called out to a personal injury crash at the intersection of Dewey Lake Street and Atwood Road.
They say a Dowagiac Union Schools bus driver, 40-year-old Benjamin Lee Hoopes of Dowagiac, was traveling southbound on Atwood Road with four Dowagiac students and another bus driver, 45-year-old Roy Payne, on the bus. Hoopes disregarded the stop sign at the intersection and the bus was struck by a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Christopher Weber of Dowagiac, who was traveling westbound on Dewey Lake Street.
Weber’s vehicle ran off the roadway into a ditch and the bus ended up on its side in the roadway.
All students but one were turned over to their parents at the scene. The fourth student, along with Payne, was transported to Borgess Lee Hospital in Dowagiac for their injuries.
The accident remains under investigation.
