PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Portage Street Mill and Fill Program consists of major maintenance to selected streets to enhance structural integrity and ride quality
and prolong the street’s life.
These improvements include removing badly worn road areas and overlaying the surface with 1.5 inches of new asphalt starting with Oakland Drive from West Osterhout south to the
city limits, weather permitting.
One lane of travel will remain open during paving operations.
City officials say residents in the areas where such work is taking place should be aware that a “tac coat” (oily substance) that is sprayed on the street prior to paving to bond the new asphalt to the old surface. They also say that driving on the tac coat should be avoided as this material may attach to tires and vehicle undercarriages and may be carried onto driveways or garage floors.
To ensure the safety of residents and contracted employees, the city is requesting that vehicles be removed from the roadway during the project.
Questions and concerns can be directed to the Department of Public Works at 269-329-4444.
