KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners Tuesday night handed out $26 million American Rescue Plan Act funding, after struggling for a year over how best to dispense the money.
The funding will help the elderly, the poor, small businesses, recovery groups, court and community corrections programs and help build an urgent care mental health clinic.
Board Chair Mike Quinn says the money is going to help a lot of local residents.
The largest single grant will go to rebuild Sunset Dam near Vicksburg at $2.5-million.
Among the proposals rejected were a $7 million request to knock down old paper plants in Parchment and a proposal to protect heritage grapes for fine wines.
The county has not spent all their money yet. The first three subcommittees made their recommendations this week. Others will report at future meetings.
