KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Western Michigan University head football coach P.J. Fleck says anything can happen Friday when his Broncos take on the No. 5 Michigan State Spartans at Waldo Stadium — a game which, many say, is the biggest in the history of the program.
“We have an elite opponent coming into our place — I mean, that’s no secret,” Fleck said. “But, I think our team’s better, their team is better — we’re both much-improved in every area, every facet since the last time we played.”
“That’s why, for three hours, you face each other — you just don’t assume that somebody will win.”
Claims that the Spartans are looking past the Broncos to No. 7 Oregon next week may offer a glimmer of hope, even though Mark Dantonio specifically denied it at his news conference Tuesday in East Lansing.
Fleck said, regardless, his team has a shot to pull off a major upset.
“Anything is possible, right? I mean, impossible is nothing – period. And that’s why you play the game,” Fleck said during the program’s annual press luncheon Tuesday afternoon.
Representatives with the university say the crowd will be split 70-30 with Broncos fans in the majority — but there will probably be a number with split loyalties.
