Employees of Newell Rubbermaid left their work spaces behind, lost the ties and skirts, put on matching T-shirts and headed into the community Thursday to take part in volunteer projects during a global day of service.
This year, the workers built a garden and outdoor classroom at the Douglas Community Association.
“It’s going to be utilized by the kids to come out to learn about what grows and how things grow in cycles,” association program manager Cheree Thomas said.
Nate Young, the company’s Kalamazoo spokesperson, said work throughout the company was noticeable.
“We probably have about 3,000 people involved worldwide in 1,500 locations,” Young said.
He also said other employees took on additional local projects.
