KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller announced Wednesday that there will be no 9/11 memorial ceremony this year.
This is due to being unable to find a suitable venue with social distance measures in mind.
“This is the first year in 13 years that we will not hold the 9/11 ceremony to honor the men and women who were lost in the 9/11 attacks,” Fuller said in an interview. “We could not find a location to hold it because of our crowd size and be able to social distance, as well as make sure people were safe with masks. And so, we had to make the sad decision to cancel this years’ event.”
Meanwhile, Fuller says that Kalamazoo residents need to remain diligent during the pandemic.
“We have to remember that we are a strong community, and we will get through this together,” Fuller said. “I want people to understand that we have more time ahead of us. We have got to go through the procedures and make sure people are safe from COVID-19. Our future is probably gonna be changed by it, but we will get through this together. We need to stick to the Zoom meetings and understand that we all want to be together, we just can’t right now.”
Last year, the ceremony had to be moved to a new location in Portage due to construction at Bronson Park at the time, which would normally be where the ceremony is held.
