LANSING (WKZO-AM) — Three state senators are sponsoring legislation that would restore the tax breaks for charitable contributions that were eliminated when Gov. Rick Snyder first came to office, as part of his effort to balance the budget.
Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker, a Republican representing the 20th district, said cutting the tax breaks hurt many organizations that serve the poor, like food banks, libraries and homeless shelters.
Other bills would also mean a tax break for donations to museums, state colleges and community foundations. There is also a tax break for families that adopt a child that would be restored.
A tax break for people who donate old cars to non-profits would also be established again under the legislation.
Don’t get out your checkbooks just yet, though — the package of bills still has to survive the legislative grinder in Lansing, and get the Gov. Snyder’s signature before they will actually be restored.
