KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — On Friday, July 15, a Florida man was bound over to face trial in the 9th Circuit Court in Kalamazoo County to face trial for multiple counts Criminal Sexual Conduct.
32-year-old Cameron James Alvarez of Port St. Lucie Florida is facing 3 counts of First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and 1 Count of Second Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct.
During a preliminary examination, an 18-year-old victim testified that in 2010, Alvarez sexually assaulted her in her dorm room on the campus of Western Michigan University where she was a freshman at the time.
Following the victim’s testimony, 8th District Court Judge Tiffany Ankley found probable cause to believe that Alvarez committed the acts of sexual assault by using force or coercion.
Since his arrest, additional women have come forward reporting that they were sexually assaulted by Alvarez, which allegedly took place between 2009 and 2014 in and around Kalamazoo and East Lansing.
If convicted, Alvarez faces up to life in prison.
The investigation and prosecution of Alverez is part of the Kalamazoo Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) Project.
The Kalamazoo SAKI Project is funded by the Michigan Legislature and is a cooperative project involving the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, the Kalamazoo
County Prosecutor’s Office, Kalamazoo County Law Enforcement Agencies and the YWCA of Kalamazoo.
