LANSING (WKZO-AM) — A newly-released report by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality says commercial and agricultural development has cost Michigan 4.2 million acres of wetlands between the 1800s and 2005.
The agency says the biggest losses have occurred in southeast Michigan, with the top losers in Monroe, Wayne, Saginaw and Sanilac counties.
Most west Michigan counties have lost between 21 and 60 percent of their wetlands since European settlers moved into the area.
