KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — While the immigration issue has become a red-hot topic among the Republican presidential candidates, commissioners have voted to make Kalamazoo County a “welcoming community.”
“The ‘Welcoming Kalamazoo’ initiative aims to build cooperation, respect and compassion among all in our community, including all immigrants and non-immigrants alike,” Commissioner Stephanie Moore said Wednesday, reading from the resolution.
Kalamazoo, the latest in the state of Michigan, joins about half-dozen other communities, including Detroit, East Lansing and Sterling Heights, that have approved similar resolutions.
Moore said the resolution allows the county to commit to immigrants, giving them the support they need to become productive members of the community.
