SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Divers from the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department have located the body of a man on Thursday, July 14, who drowned while trying to save a young boy in Lake Michigan in South Haven.
The victim has been identified as 33-year-old Anthony Paul Diehl of Beaver Creek, Ohio.
Authorities say Diehl was located approximately 50 yards west of South Pier.
Diehl went missing in the lake after trying to save a young boy struggling in the water at North Beach in South Haven on Wednesday, July 13. He was presumed to have drowned when teams began their search.
The Search was called off around 10 p.m. because of fading daylight and rough water conditions said Van Buren County Sheriff Dan Abbot.
Dive teams from South Haven Emergency Services, Van Buren County, and Allegan County, in addition to the U.S. Coast Guard, and Great Lakes Search and Rescue had all resumed recovery efforts Thursday morning at 7 a.m. Diehl’s family has been notified.
