ALLEGAN (WKZO-AM) — The Michigan Secretary of State’s Office is investigating whether Cindy Gamrat is eligible to run for reelection, given that she was expelled from the state House.
There is an opinion floating around that, because she was found unqualified to serve, she would have to wait until the next term to run again.
Joyce Watts, the clerk of Allegan County, says there is nothing in election law that would keep Gamrat off the ballot.
“If there is any way of barring her running, it would have to be found in the House rules, which I don’t have,” Watts said.
Meetings are planned on Monday to make a determination. Todd Courser quit, so the same rule would not apply to him.
Gamrat filed paperwork to run Thursday, while Courser announced his campaign during a CNN morning show Friday. Both are accused of using taxpayer resources to cover up a sexual relationship with each other.
