KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The League of Women Voters of the Kalamazoo Area has adopted a Climate Emergency Resolution.
The resolution was adopted by a unanimous vote by the Board of Directors at the League’s meeting on Monday, June 27.
According to a release from the LWV, the resolution commits to advocating for legislation on actions that use the most immediate, effective and equitable solutions recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Such actions they say will go toward the goal of no more than 1.8 degrees Celsius of global warming by 2040.
The resolution also states that global warming is already causing harm, and that according to the Panel, the most optimistic scenario would be to have the earth’s carbon emissions fall to net zero by 2050.
They say also that the resolution calls for rectifying disproportionately adverse effects of climate change for disadvantaged peoples worldwide, including indigenous communities, communities of color, migrant communities, the poor, women, youth, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.
The League is also set to advocate for expanding social infrastructure to adequately meet the changing needs of the population, including displaced people and migrants.
